Liverpool remain interested in a move for David Alaba in January, according to Football Insider, with the Austrian rejecting a new deal at Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old is a key member of Bayern’s Champions League-winning squad, shining as a left-sided centre-back.

Alaba has been linked with a move to Liverpool in the past, as Jurgen Klopp eyes up potential defensive reinforcements.

On Wednesday, Bild journalist Christian Falk confirmed on Twitter that the third round of contract talks between Alaba and Bayern had ‘failed’, leading to further doubts surrounding his future.

Liverpool are reportedly one of the clubs keeping an eye on the situation, especially with the Reds looking so short of centre-back options at the moment.

I think Alaba would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool, should a deal ever come to fruition in January.

The Austria international has been at the very top level for many years now, winning his country’s Player of the Year award seven times and clinching nine Bundesliga and two Champions League titles.

Alaba is also very versatile, proving capable of thriving at centre-back, left-back or in central midfield. That can only be a good thing for Liverpool.

The technical quality and intelligence he possesses could make him a perfect fit in this Reds team, with Alaba enjoying an 89.3 percent pass completion rate in the Bundesliga this season, as well as averaging two interceptions per game.
