A number of Liverpool supporters have been sending messages of appreciation to Rhys Williams, following an excellent performance against Atalanta.
The 19-year-old was handed his maiden Champions League start on Tuesday night, as the Reds made the trip to Italy for a potentially tough game.
Williams started alongside Joe Gomez, but on an evening when many expected him to be given a real test, he passed with flying colours.
Liverpool were magnificent throughout in their Group D clash, cruising to a 5-0 victory and even taking their foot off the gas in the final 30 minutes.
While others made the headlines, in particular hat-trick hero Diogo Jota, Williams was a calming presence at the heart of the Reds’ defence, looking like a seasoned professional who had been doing the job for years.
He arguably looks a better prospect than Nathaniel Phillips – he is four years younger and looks superior on the ball – and if Joel Matip isn’t fit for Sunday’s trip to Manchester City, using Williams could be the logical option.
These Liverpool supporters took to Twitter to respond to Williams’ post-match tweet, hailing his brilliance and no doubt making him feel on top of the world.
