Marcus Rashford gave Manchester United a 1-0 lead in the first half, Jurgen Klopp felt the goal should have been overturned with Divock Origi fouled in the build-up.

The Liverpool manager then made a flurry of changes in the second half and substitute Adam Lallana rescued a point in front of the away fans, taping in a cross from Andy Robertson.

With the points shared for the bitter rivals, Read Liverpool’s Tristan Fitzpatrick and Ste Hoare broke down the action post-match.

Team news, Mo Salah out, Alisson in, Divock Origi on the left, Sadio Mane on the right. What were your impressions of the team?

Ste: No surprises for me once the news came in that Salah was injured. I said in the build-up that I’d want Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain or Naby Keita in the team if they are fully fit but there was no indication that either was ready to play a full game.

Tristan: Anytime Mo Salah doesn’t play, Liverpool are weaker. That being said, I like Origi a lot, I like him on the wing as well. The downside with that though is that Mane is forced to play on the right. We couldn’t get anything going and I think that could have affected things.

Let’s start with the first goal, Divock Origi felt he was fouled in the buildup, VAR checked it and the goal stood. Should it have stood?

Tristan: I wanted it to, but it’s not enough. VAR did its job in checking it, but it’s not clear and obvious. Martin Atkinson should have blown for a foul, he’s missed one, can’t blame the entire game on that.

Ste: If VAR isn’t calling that as a foul, then it’s never calling anything a foul that the referee doesn’t see. For me, it was a clear and obvious error, I have no idea why VAR disagreed.

Sadio Mane had the ball in the United net, but that was overturned by VAR because of handball. Should that have stood?

Ste: I think they got that one right. The ball hitting Mane’s arm helped him control the ball so I think it was a fair call, albeit an annoying one.

Tristan: Again I wanted it, but it’s the rule. If you touch the ball with your hand it’s going to get overturned. Personally, I think it’s a bad rule, or that the wording is poor. Mane had his arms in a natural position he’s not trying to control it, in the future, I’d like that kind of goal to stand.

Not a whole lot of chances for the Reds in the first half, how would sum up the first half?

Tristan: As I mentioned earlier, there was just not enough going on and United executed their plan, they also seemed more up for it. Really disappointing start to the game.

Ste: Dreadful. We looked like we’ve often done at Old Trafford; like we’d forgotten how to play football. Nothing really looked right.

Second half Klopp made a flurry of changes, Adam Lallana, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlin and Naby Keita all came on, the formation switched to two-up-top. What did you think of the changes?

Ste: In the end, it was Klopp’s subs that saw Liverpool improve massively. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Keita were far more positive than the players they replaced, whilst Lallana popped up with a very important goal. Credit to the manager for making those subs.

Tristan: In typical fashion, I actually thought the Lallana move was a desperate mistake, what do I know? The quality wasn’t the problem today it was the effort or execution, the subs provided that. Siden note: Oxlade-Chamberlin needs to play more, as does Keita.

Two points dropped or one point rescued?

Ste: Before the game, I’d have called a draw two points dropped but given the way we played, and how late the goal came, I’d have to say it’s one point rescued.

Tristan: One point rescued. Jordan Henderson said post-game “if you can’t win, don’t lose.” They played poorly and you just have to take it and put the point on the board.
