It was a successful game week eight for Jurgen Klopp’s men. The Reds first beat Salzburg 4-3 at Anfield on Wednesday night and followed that up with a dramatic 2-1 win over Leicester to remain top of the Premier League.
Joel Matip made his way into the power rankings last week and also claimed the PFA Player of the Month for September. However, the Cameroonian did not play against Salzburg or Leicester through injury.
Andy Robertson and James Milner both got on the scoresheet this week trying to force their way into the power rankings for the first time this year.
Mo Salah broke his three-game scoring drought with a pair against Salzburg. Sadio Mane remains Liverpool’s top scorer though, he scored his eighth against the Foxes.
As the season progresses, we will continue to work out who sits in the top five of our Power Rankings, determining who Liverpool’s most influential and consistent individuals are.
Here’s who tops the pile after Gameweek Eight of the Premier League season:
5- Joel Matip
Last Week: 4
Injury has dropped Matip’s position down a spot. In his absence, Liverpool struggled to defend against Salzburg, shipping three goals in 20 minutes to the Austrian champions.
With Dejan Lovren in his place against Leicester, their attack was kept quiet but still scored with their only chance of the game.
Matip has been brilliant all season and I can’t bring myself to drop him out for missing two games. We’ll see if he returns to form against United in two weeks’ time.
4- Mo Salah
Last Week: 5
Salah must have heard my warnings because he was dangerously close to falling out of the power rankings last week!
The Egyptian did, though, score a pair against Salzburg including the vital fourth game-winning goal.
He’s still not completely in form though and did struggle against Leicester. He’s still got room to climb up the rankings yet.
3- Trent Alexander-Arnold
Last Week: 2
Alexander-Arnold got an assist this week setting-up fellow full-back Robertson for his goal against Salzburg.
The Scouser was a constant threat down the right that the Austrian side could not figure out.
He even almost repeated his quick corner routine with Sadio Mane, who inexplicably failed to get a touch on the ball one yard out from goal.
Leicester provided a tougher task but even still, their left-back Ben Chilwell was forced on his heels a few times by Alexander-Arnold’s bombing runs down the right touchline.
2- Roberto Firmino
Last week: 1
Firmino remained top of the power rankings by default in a poor week last week.
This week, the Brazilian may have dropped spots but was his usual magical self. He picked up three assists against Salzburg, where he was the main creative force.
Much like Salah though, he couldn’t completely get into the game against Leicester and hence drops down to second.
1- Sadio Mane
Last week: 3
The first goal in a game can be so crucial and Mane is making a habit of grabbing them.
The Senegalese winger scored the opening goal nine minutes into the clash with Salzburg, and then just before halftime, he got the opener against Leicester.
Mane also won the penalty that gave Liverpool the 2-1 win over the Foxes.
Like Salah and Firmino, he did have a three-game drought that was causing him to slip down the rankings but now, with two in two this week, to add to his eight goals in ten starts, he was an easy choice at number one.
