Having been in England’s top flight for two seasons they have come up against Jurgen Klopp’s men three times. However, before their promotion to the Premier League in 2017, they hadn’t played against Liverpool in England’s top flight since 1972, so this week’s top five wins will definitely have a nostalgic feel to it!
After Manchester City defeated Manchester United in their own backyard on Wednesday, the destiny of the title race now rests in Pep Guardiola’s hands.
However, the Reds won’t be giving up anytime soon, they trail the Cityzens by one point and know that a win on Friday night will take them back above Guardiola and his men ahead of their trip to Turf Moor on Sunday.
We will be taking a trip down memory and looking at Liverpool’s best wins against the Terriers.
October 2017: Liverpool 3-0 Huddersfield
Jurgen Klopp faced best friend David Wagner for the first time in his managerial career when the pair came head to head at Anfield in 2017.
A sloppy first half from Klopp’s men against the newly promoted Yorkshire club included a missed penalty from Mo Salah.
However, Liverpool came flying out the blocks in the second half with a delicate dink from Daniel Sturridge to break the deadlock five minutes after the break.
Roberto Firmino added his name to the score sheet moments later, then an emphatic finish from Gini Wijnaldum into the roof of the net wrapped up the points for the Reds.
October 2018: Huddersfield 0-1 Liverpool
Liverpool scrapped a victory during their last encounter with Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Mo Salah scored the only goal of the game in the 24th minute to hand Klopp’s side all three points in a very testing Premier League game as they returned to the top of the league, joint with Manchester City.
In one of Liverpool tougher tests away from home this season, Klopp described winning games with ”average performances” after his side’s victory.
In a game where Huddersfield went to toe-to-toe with a Liverpool side that didn’t play anywhere near to the best of their ability.
Huddersfield would have felt hard done that they didn’t take anything from the game, especially when captain Jonathan Hogg’s long-range effort rattled the post.
January 2018: Huddersfield 0-3 Liverpool
Liverpool bounced back from their two consecutive defeats to West Brom and Swansea with a professional performance at the home of Huddersfield Town.
Liverpool showed no signs of low confidence as they controlled the game from the start, Emre Can’s long-range half volley from 25 yards opened the scoring for Klopp’s men.
Roberto Firmino doubled the advantage in first-half injury time with a goal as cheeky as you’ll ever see. The Brazilian dribbled down the byline giving the Jonas Lossl the eyes, before then squeezing it past Lossl at his near post.
Liverpool strolled around in the second half as the game was all but done before Mo Salah scored from 12 yards after Emre Can was brought down.
December 1999: Huddersfield 0-2 Liverpool
Liverpool negotiated a tricky FA Cup third round tie against Steve Bruce’s Huddersfield Town.
Huddersfield dominated the early proceedings of the game having the better of the chances to open the scoring. However, it was the visitors who opened the scoring 10 minutes before the break when Titi Camara thunderbolt broke the deadlock.
Houllier’s men were far from comfortable, they grabbed themselves a second midway through the second half with Dominic Matteo finished off a superb counter-attack to put the Reds in the hat for the next round.
October 1971: Liverpool 2-0 Huddersfield Town.
Bill Shankly’s Liverpool side overturned Ian Greaves’ struggling Huddersfield Town side.
Liverpool opened the scoring on 57 minutes after Tommy Smith’s penalty was saved by Huddersfield stopper David Lawson, Smith though reacted the quicker of the two to tap home the rebound and give Shankly’s men the advantage.
Liverpool wrapped up the three points for the Reds when Alun Evans settled the game, scoring the second goal 10 minutes from time and take move the Reds up to seventh.
