Liverpool were in cruise control before half-time against Atletico Madrid as two goals and a man advantage put the hosts in the driver’s seat at Anfield.

This dominance allowed Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp to make changes where necessary and avoid risk to key players.

As such, Roberto Firmino replaced Sadio Mane at the break after the Senegalese ace was booked and became entangled in numerous spiky moments.

Soon after going down injured, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was removed from the firing line as midfield options are currently in short supply.

After the match, Klopp delivered a sweeping update to BT Sport on all those injury worries as well as Curtis Jones who had been left out of the squad altogether.

We lost Curtis Jones last night in training. He had a finger to the eye. Some of the things that can happen in life are extraordinary! You need to be lucky with injuries here and there, and we are not that lucky. Especially in midfield. Last night in training, Curtis got a finger to the eye and cannot see out of it. He needs to lie down for a week. We won 2-0. If Bobby didn’t suffer his hamstring, it would have pretty much been perfect. Not a lot of things in life are perfect, you always have to suffer one thing, and tonight that was Bobby’s hamstring.

There were positives arising as Klopp confirmed Oxlade-Chamberlain’s substitution was merely a precaution.

Meanwhile, there was more good news as Fabinho and Thiago both made a seamless return to the fold in favourable conditions.

It would appear that it never rains but it pours on the injury front at Anfield these days.

Every game seems to bring a new concern and Klopp will be hoping that Firmino’s issue isn’t a serious one.

One saving grace for the Reds could be the imminent international break, although it would appear to be unlikely that the Brazilian will feature against West Ham this weekend.
