Liverpool hopeful that Joel Matip and Thiago will start against Man City

Joel Matip and Thiago could both face Manchester City this weekend, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The pair have been absent for a sustained period, with Liverpool getting by without them and long-term absentee Virgil van Dijk. The Reds have a huge game coming up on Sunday as they make the trip to Manchester City in the Premier League.

This latest report claims that Matip could come back into the team at the expense of Rhys Williams, having been fit enough to make the substitutes’ bench in Tuesday’s 5-0 win away to Atalanta.

Meanwhile, Thiago is considered an option to start in midfield, even though he hasn’t played since being on the receiving end of a terrible tackle by Everton’s Richarlison three weeks ago.

I would definitely start both Matip and Thiago on Sunday, even though the pair could be lacking match fitness. Williams did superbly against Atalanta, but City will be a very different challenge and Matip will be key alongside Joe Gomez.

Thiago’s world-class ability speaks for itself, and seeing him slot into midfield next to Jordan Henderson and Gini Wijnaldum looks a mouthwatering prospect, with Curtis Jones making way.

Liverpool have performed admirably amid this injury crisis, winning their last five matches, but the return of key men should hopefully take them up another level.
