Gerrard tips Salah to smash his European goalscoring record

Steven Gerrard believes Mohamed Salah will “embarrass” his European goalscoring record for Liverpool over time.

The Egyptian drew level with Gerrard’s tally of 21 goals in the Champions League on Tuesday night, curling home a lovely finish in Liverpool’s 5-0 victory away to Atalanta.

No Reds players in Champions League or European Cup history have more goals than the pair on the continent, as Salah continues to showcase his brilliance.

It is surely only a matter of time before Liverpool’s No.11 is out in front on his own, with Atalanta heading to Anfield on November 25.

Speaking to Herald Scotland, Rangers manager Gerrard tipped Salah to obliterate his record, admitting he would be happy to see it:

Records are there to be broken, of course they are. I was very proud to see Mo Salah equal my goalscoring record for Liverpool in Europe, it was only a matter of time.

I honestly think he’ll go on and embarrass my record and I hope that he does.

It is a great achievement by Salah, considering so many of the great names who have played for Liverpool in European competition. It is just the latest example of why the 28-year-old has to be considered a genuine Reds legend as he breaks record after record at Anfield.

To have scored 103 goals in 164 appearances, mostly from a wide position, is an astonishing return. Indeed, Salah already has nine goals to his name this season, as he searches for a third Premier League Golden Boot.
