Rather oddly the international break came before the start of the season as the UEFA Nations League had games to catch up on.
The Europeans in Liverpool’s squad were called up for their nation’s sides with 11 players going off for national team duty.
Here’s how they performed.
England
Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold featured in both of England’s games, a 1-0 victory away at Iceland, where former Red Raheem Sterling scored from the spot, and a 0-0 draw away at Denmark.
Gomez played the full game against Iceland, conceding a penalty in the 92nd minute which was missed by Birkir Bjarnason
Alexander-Arnold came off the bench in the 72nd minute replacing the red-carded Kyle Walker at right back.
Both Liverpool men started the Denmark game alongside another former Liverpool player Conor Coady who made his England debut.
Alexander Arnold, who played at right wing-back was replaced in the 87th minute for another debutant, Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
England are second in League A2 of the Nations League after the two games played.
Scotland
Captain Andrew Robertson played the full game at left wing-back as Scotland drew 1-1 at home to Israel.
Scotland then won against the Czech Republic 2-1, Robertson again played the full game at left wing-back, this time picking up a yellow card.
Scotland are in first place of Group B2 in the UEFA Nations League after the two games played.
Wales
Both Harry Wilson and Neco Williams were called up for Wales’ games in the break. Wilson came off the bench for Gareth Bale at halftime in Wales’ first game a 1-0 victory over Finland. Williams made his debut for the senior team coming off the bench in the 60th minute.
The next match provided a moment to remember for Williams as he came off the bench to score the winner in the 93rd minute for Wales against Bulgaria. Wilson was an unused substitute.
Wales are first in Group B4 in the UEFA Nations League.
Republic of Ireland
Caoimhin Kelleher was an unused substitute in both of Ireland’s games a 1-1 draw with Bulgaria and a 1-0 defeat against Finland.
Ireland are in third place of Group B4 in the UEFA Nations League.
The Netherlands
Both Virgil van Dijk and Georginio Wijnaldum played the full game for the Netherlands in a 1-0 victory over Poland in the UEFA Nations League – Wijnaldum played in a more advanced midfield role in this game.
It was a defeat for the Netherlands in their next game, losing 1-0 to Italy – Wijnaldum and van Dijk both played every minute with Wijnaldum playing right midfield.
The Netherlands are in second place after two games played in League A1 of the UEFA Nations League.
Serbia
Marko Grujic was an unused substitute for both of Serbia’s games, a 3-1 defeat to Russia and a 0-0 draw against Turkey.
Serbia are currently in fourth place, bottom of Group B3 in the UEFA Nations League.
Greece
Kostas Tsimikas was called up for Greece’s two games but missed out after testing positive for COVID-19.
Greece drew 0-0 with Slovenia and beat Kosovo 2-1 as they sit in first place in Group C3 of the UEFA Nations League.
England Under 21
Rhian Brewster came off the bench in the 73rd minute but could not contribute to any of the six goals that the England Under 21s put past Kosovo.
Brewster then came off the bench in the 81st minute as England Under 21s beat Austria Under 21s 2-1 both games in the UEFA Under 21 Euro Championship and England are sitting in first place in Group 3.
