Jurgen Klopp has delivered a positive update over the return to firs -team action of Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has been missing since pre-season.

The former Arsenal man was forced to leave the Reds’ pre-season training camp early when he damaged knee ligaments – a recurring problem for the explosive English midfielder.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the visit of Wolves on Sunday night, Klopp said: ”Ox looks really promising, ball work but we develop that in days and weeks.”

The 27-year-old recovered from a serious knee problem to have a major impact on Liverpool’s successful 2019/20 campaign – making 43 appearances in all competitions and scoring eight goals – and his influence in undoubtedly a miss from the Anfield squad.

Despite the absence of Oxlade-Chamberlain for the season so far – as well as a host of other injury and illness problems – Klopp’s side are joint-top on points at the Premier League summit and have guaranteed top spot in their Champions League group.

Although Oxlade-Chamberlain may not be an obvious starter in the champions’ first-choice midfield, he certainly is part of the conversation when fully fit and at the peak of his powers.

His direct running style and long-range shooting offers an X-factor into an otherwise workmanlike midfield.

Given the woeful time Klopp has endured with injuries in recent weeks, this is some overdue positive news. Albeit potentially the turn of the year before we see Oxlade-Chamberlain involved again, his return will be a blessing for the German.
