On this day (April 24) in 2018, Liverpool were at their red hot best as Jurgen Klopp’s side demolished Roma 5-2 in the UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg.

It was a fever pitch European night at Anfield when Mohamed Salah faced his former club and Alisson Becker lined up for the Serie A giants.

Salah opened the scoring on 36 minutes before doubling the Reds’ lead on the stroke of half time – no more than the rampant hosts had deserved.

Roberto Firmino had assisted the double salvo for the Egyptian, but it was the King who turned provider for the third when he set up Sadio Mane and Firmino in quick succession to hand Klopp’s men a four-goal advantage.

When the Brazilian slotted home Liverpool’s fifth on the night the tie looked all-but over.

However, in the final 10 minutes, Eusebio Di Francesco’s Roma side roused themselves and former Manchester City man Edin Dzeko netted an important away goal before Diego Perotti scored a penalty to renew hope yet further.

Those late goals ultimately weren’t enough to dampen the spirits of delirious Kopites after what had been another in a long line of remarkable European nights at Anfield.

A week later the Reds survived yet another comeback scare to qualify for the final in Kyiv 7-6 on aggregate.
