Liverpool came out on top of the first of two meetings this week against Arsenal at Anfield.
The Reds ran out 3-1 winners in the Premier League clash after an almost perfect performance.
Mikel Arteta’s visiting side were somewhat passive in the opening exchanges as the champions flexed their considerable muscles.
However, it was the Gunners who took a surprise lead through Alexandre Lacazette. During a rare Arsenal foray into the Liverpool half, Andy Robertson miscued his clearance directly into the French striker’s path for him to scramble home.
The lead wasn’t to last long though. Scorned by undeservedly going behind, Mo Salah forced Bernd Leno into a save, although the visiting keeper could only gift Sadio Mane an easy tap in.
Moments later, Jurgen Klopp’s side were ahead as Trent Alexander-Arnold assisted his opposite full-back at the back post; Robertson redeeming himself for his earlier error.
With 10 minutes remaining, new signing Diogo Jota replaced the outstanding Mane and in truth, he could have scored a hat-trick!
The Portuguese forward did get his name on the scoresheet with minutes to go as his volley from the edge of the box found the bottom right corner.
Here’s how we rated the Reds…
Alisson Becker - 8
Stopped two one on one efforts from Alexandre Lacazette, albeit one was ultimately was ruled offside.
Trent Alexander-Arnold - 8
The best performance of the season so far from the young right-back. Assisted the second goal and provided quality all night.
Joe Gomez - 9
Returning after injury, it was a more than a solid display from VVD’s usual partner. Looked very assured.
Virgil van Dijk - 9
Solid as ever defensively but his best moments came thanks to his range of forward passing.
Andy Robertson - 8
Made up for his awful error quickly with his goal and remained a threat down the left throughout.
Fabinho - 8
Back in his usual surroundings and equally impressive as he was at centre-back last week. Tough tackling and always available to receive the ball.
Naby Keita - 7
Continues his improved form this season. Always carried the team forwards and did things others in the same midfield couldn’t.
Gini Wijnaldum - 7
Could have scored early on and continued to be a threat as the match wore on.
Mohamed Salah - 8
Assisted the equaliser with his direct running power and shot. Perhaps a little too greedy when taking the ball off Jota’s toes late on!
Roberto Firmino - 7
Saw a shot deflected wide late on and perhaps could have influenced more in the area. A nightmare as ever for defenders with his pressing.
Sadio Mane - 9
More than deserved his goal in a sublime display. Was almost impossible to dispossess at times and caused Rob Holding serious problems.
(Sub) James Milner - 6
Replaced Keita and added experience and energy in place of creativity.
(Sub) Diogo Jota - 8
A major threat in his 10 minutes and ultimately got his goal. A very impressive Premier League start.
(Sub) Takumi Minamino - NA
Fleeting outing. More likely to start Thursday’s clash against the same opposition.
