Former Liverpool assistant manager Phil Thompson has been discussing the potential future transfer plans at Anfield.

Despite rarely spending large sums in recent years under FSG without prior big-money sales, the Reds continue to be linked with sensational moves for the world’s hottest talent.

Borussia Dortmund duo Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham have been touted as possible targets, albeit likely to cost in excess of £150million combined.

Speaking to The Express, Thompson, who also represented the club on 477 occasions, has called for Liverpool to at least be in the conversation for star names.

I’d like to think our hat is going to be in the ring for some of the big players that are going to be about. Haaland is one, even Bellingham, who I think is going to be a star. These players, I just want us to be asking questions, we need to be in there, and hopefully we are saving our money for a big one.

The 67-year-old also suggested that Jurgen Klopp may look to bolster the central midfield options in the near future having struggled with availability earlier in the campaign.

At present, the Reds are fighting on all four fronts as the new year approaches with a place in the Carabao Cup semi-final and UEFA Champions League knockout phase already booked for 2022.

Whilst captures such as Halland or Bellingham would be sensational pieces of business, without a big sale it seems nigh on impossible the club would pull off such deals.

Instead, it’s a far more realistic prospect that the club would unearth a lesser-known and undoubtedly less expensive alternative option to strengthen the ranks at Anfield.

Whoever arrives into Jurgen Klopp’s squad would stand every chance of becoming a hit as the previous captures of Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are testaments to.
