Liverpool visit Manchester City this evening in arguably the biggest Premier League game of the season so far.
The Reds went into the weekend top of the table and know that victory at the Etihad Stadium will put them eight points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, albeit having played one game more.
Here’s how we think Liverpool will line up this evening…
Alisson
Alisson was superb against Atalanta, shining even in a 5-0 win for Liverpool.
His place in the team cannot be disputed at City.
Trent Alexander-Arnold
Alexander-Arnold has hit top form again and he will be a key figure this weekend.
His attacking quality will give the Reds an extra dimension, but he will also be tested by Raheem Sterling.
Joel Matip
Matip is expected to make a pleasing return to action, just in time for a huge game.
The Cameroonian will need to be at his best against a potent City attack.
Joe Gomez
Gomez deserves great praise for his performances since Virgil van Dijk’s injury, even if he hasn’t been perfect.
His influence at the heart of Liverpool’s defence will again be vital at the Etihad.
Andy Robertson
Robertson has been consistently good so far this season, arguably outperforming Alexander-Arnold.
He could come up against the tricky Riyad Mahrez on Sunday, which will test his defensive qualities.
Jordan Henderson
Henderson’s influence seems to be growing all the time and he is a certainty to start against City.
He is likely to sit in front of the defence in the continued absence of Fabinho.
Gini Wijnaldum
Wijnaldum has put together magnificent back-to-back displays against West Ham and Atalanta, which bodes well.
The Dutchman’s industry will be so important in what could be a high-octane contest this evening.
Naby Keita
We think Keita will earn a start after injury, with Curtis Jones making way for him.
Thiago is out, otherwise he would have started, so the Guinean is the best alternative.
He is under pressure to perform, though.
Mohamed Salah
Salah has been outstanding this season, scoring nine goals to date.
City will see him as one of Liverpool’s main men to fear, with his pace and movement potentially wreaking havoc.
Sadio Mane
Mane was unplayable at times against Atalanta, showing what a world-class attacking player he is.
The 28-year-old will take up his usual left-sided role at the Etihad, locking horns with Kyle Walker.
Roberto Firmino
Jurgen Klopp has a massive decision to make, but we think he will go for Firmino over Diogo Jota.
The Portuguese’s hat-trick in Italy suggests it is madness not to play him, but Firmino knows this fixture so well, and has scored three times at the Etihad in the past.
If he produces another limp showing, however, a spell out of the team is required, especially if Jota shines from the substitutes’ bench.
