It will have been 52 days since the euphoric scenes on The Kop when the Premier League champions attempt to do it all over again, starting with newly-promoted Leeds United on Saturday evening.
In a battle of the 2019/20 title holders, Marcelo Bielsa’s Championship winners will present a tough opening opponent at Anfield for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Klopp’s squad enjoyed a reasonably successful pre-season, coming out on top of their most recent friendly with a convincing 7-2 victory against Blackburn, despite going two goals behind in the first half.
The squad managed to go on their usual pre-season training camp, this time to Austria as the trip to France became complicated due to quarantine restrictions.
Despite the conjecture about Liverpool’s lack of summer spend at this stage, there is set to be more competition in the squad than previously, with the youngsters a year older and ready to challenge.
Expect more from January signing Takumi Minamino, who has seemed to find his feet on Merseyside in recent weeks.
In terms of team news, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson remains a doubt for this match despite returning to full training, whilst Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is certain to miss out.
Question marks remain over the availability of new signing Kostas Tsimikas, who tested positive whilst away on international duty with Greece.
Having lost out in the Community Shield on penalties for the second year running, this time to Arsenal, now the serious business begins.
Here’s how we think the German boss will line-up his team against Leeds:
GK - ALISSON BECKER
Will hope for a better first game of the season this year compared to last, having been forced off through injury on the opening night last year.
RB - TRENT ALEXANDER ARNOLD
Back to fitness having missed the Austria trip. Played 80 minutes for England this week so should be ready for the Reds.
CB - JOE GOMEZ
Will want to further confirm himself as number one partner alongside VVD this season.
CB - VIRGIL VAN DIJK
If the Dutchman can maintain his levels of the last two seasons, the Reds are in for another successful campaign.
LB - ANDY ROBERTSON
Faces competition for his place for perhaps the first time with the arrival of Tsimikas, likely to thrive.
CDM - FABINHO
Perhaps the most obvious choice in the midfield, will be keen to add more influence going forwards this term.
CM - NABY KEITA
Began to show his best form at the back end of 2019/20 and has continued to impress during pre-season. This is a big year for the 25-year-old.
CM - GINI WIJNALDUM
Despite the speculation surrounding his future and his contract situation, the midfielder is fit and ready to go, therefore will most likely play .
RW - MOHAMED SALAH
Cut a frustrated figure at times last season despite reaching decent numbers. May yet look to improve once more.
CF - ROBERTO FIRMINO
The man who makes the front three tick. His importance goes unnoticed by outsiders, however, it would be ironic if he opened his Anfield account on day one this season after taking so long to get an Anfield goal last year.
LW - SADIO MANE
Arguably Liverpool’s best player during the title-winning season. Expect more of the same from the Senegalese forward.
